UAH Heads into GSC Tournament on High Note After Closing Regular Season with Road Win at UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a road win, defeating West Georgia by a 76-66 score on Thursday night. The Chargers improve to 14-12 (12-8 Gulf South Conference), while UWG slips to 15-11 (10-10 GSC).

Next Time Out
-Thursday's victory secured the Chargers the No. 6 seed in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championships presented by VisitSpaceCoast.com, and UAH will travel on Super Tuesday to No. 3 Seed Lee. That contest is slated for a 6 p.m. CT start in Cleveland.

Turning Point
-UAH stormed out of the gates, using a terrific defensive effort to hold West Georgia to a 25.0 percent shooting mark in the first half in building up a 38-19 lead at the break, and that cushion helped the Chargers hold off a comeback effort from the Wolves in the second half.

Inside the Box Score
-Four Chargers scored in double figures on the night with Baylee Johnson's hot ways continuing as she scored 18 in the victory.
-Katie Speegle went 7-for-9 from the floor on her way to scoring 17, while Aryn Sanders chipped in with 14 while grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.
-Rounding out UAH's double-figure scorers was Morgan Tipton who scored 11 on a 5-for-7 shooting night.
-Sanders matched Emiline Payne in handing out three assists to lead UAH.
-For the contest, UAH shot 45.5 percent while holding the hosts to a 35.5 percent mark.
-Rebounds were even at 37-37.
-The Chargers earned 27 trips to the free throw line, converting 21 of their attempts including a 7-for-8 showing from Sanders.

Inside the Flow
-UAH ended up leading wire-to-wire, never tailing in the contest after scoring the game's first bucket, and an 11-0 run to end the first quarter put the Chargers up 25-12 going into the second.
-The lead remained in double figures throughout the entirety of the second stanza as the guests held UWG to just seven points in the period to take a 38-19 advantage into the halftime break.
-UAH would push its margin out all the way to 21 early in the third quarter before the Wolves started to make a push, cutting UAH's margin to 57-44 by the end of the third.
-Seven straight points for the Chargers put the Chargers back ahead by 20 at 64-44 with 8:16 left in the game, but UWG would show strong resolve in narrowing the gap to just six at 69-63 with 1:43 remaining.
-A layup by Speegle, three free throws from Sanders, and a pair at the charity stripe from Johnson, however, helped UAH thwart the comeback effort on its way to the 76-66 victory.

Noteworthy
-Johnson has now scored in double figures in 13 straight games.
-Sanders has eight or more rebounds in 14 games, helping her own a rebounding average of 7.6 per contest.
