UAH Splits on Second Day of Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE | The No. 11 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split on day two at the 2019 Charger Chillout, blowing past Lincoln 12-0 in five innings before falling to No. 1 Southern Indiana 5-1. The Chargers are now 6-4 on the season.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will conclude play at the Chillout on Sunday when the team plays West Liberty at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. contest against Missouri St. Louis.

Game Changer
-The Chargers blew the contest wide open by scoring 10 times in the third including four runs on swing of Alaina Hampton's bat as the sophomore hit the team's first grand slam of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UAH outhit Lincoln by an 11-2 clip in the game with Shelby Booker turning in a three-hit performance while also scoring three times, while Reagan Malone went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
-Amber Hammonds, Gracie Deaton, Ashley Cornell, Jada Hayes, Shannon Long, and Hampton had UAH's other hits in the game.
-The Chargers had two hits for extra bases in addition to the big blast from Hampton as both Malone and Long tripled.
-Booker picked up three stolen bases in the contest, while Nutt and Hammonds also swiped a bag.
-Torie Garner earned the win in the circle for the Chargers, scattering just two hits while striking out three and walking none.
 
Key Plays
-The Chargers opened the scoring in the first inning when Booker stole home to make it 1-0 before a Cornell sac fly drove in Nutt to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead.
-Garner held the opposition without a hit until the third inning, and after stranding a runner on in the top half, UAH proceeded to explode for the 10-run inning in the bottom frame.
-Malone led the inning off with a triple and then scored on Booker's base hit, and Booker made it a 4-0 lead when she scored on an error later in the inning.
-Hayes then singled in the team's fifth run of the game before Hampton's grand slam made it 9-0, and Malone would score another run in the inning on another error that produced the 10-0 final.
-In total in the third, the Chargers sent 15 batters to the plate.
 
Noteworthy
-The grand slam is the first for the Chargers this year and the first since the dramatic game-winning grand slam from Kiara Akles in game two of the Super Regional last season.
-The grand slam is the first of Hampton's career.
-Garner earns her first victory in the Blue and White.

Game Changer
-Southern Indiana scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning and then limited UAH's offense to earn the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers were outhit in the game by a 7-4 clip, with Booker leading the way for UAH with two of the team's hits.
-Hampton and Nutt had the other two for the Chargers with Nutt recording a triple.
-Layton Murphy was charged with the loss for UAH, allowing three hits and four runs – of which just one was earned – before being lifted for Sydnee Uhlman who tossed the final 4.2 innings and scattered four hits and a run while striking out five.
 
Key Plays
-The defending national champions opened the scoring in the first before tacking on the three runs in the third, and USI then pushed in front 5-0 when it added another run in the bottom frame of the fourth.
-The Chargers then got on the board when with two outs Booker singled, stole second, and scored on Nutt's triple to create the eventual 5-1 final.
 
Noteworthy
-With five more hits on Saturday, Booker is now hitting .485 for the season and has multiple hits in three straight contests.
-Uhlman now owns a team-high 16 strikeouts while walking none in 21.2 innings of work.
