CARROLLTON, Ga. | The No. 14 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split with host West Georgia on Saturday afternoon, winning 10-3 in the nightcap of the doubleheader to bounce back from the opening 2-1 loss earlier in the day. UAH moves to 21-7 (9-2 Gulf South Conference) with the split, while UWG goes to 17-15 (5-10 GSC).

West Georgia 2, UAH 1
Game Changer
-A Raven Smith single in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed across the go-ahead run to eventually give the Wolves the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Neither team was able to get much going offensively with UWG recording five hits to UAH's four.
-Mackenzie Nutt had two of UAH's hits in the contest, while Reagan Malone had one from the top of the order and Ashley Cornell had the other with a solo home run.
-Kiara Akles went 4.1 innings in the circle, striking out two and allowing just three hits while walking one, and Sydnee Uhlman was charged with the loss as she tossed 1.2 innings of relief, giving up two hits and a run.
 
Key Plays
-Neither team was able to get a runner past first base until the bottom of the third when a two-out walk turned into a run for the Wolves, and the score remained tilted in UWG's favor until the top of the fifth when Cornell homered on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the inning and tie it at 1-1.
-UWG appeared to have the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, but an appeal by the Chargers worked as it was determined the runner had not touched home.
-Smith then singled in the run in the bottom of the sixth with two outs to push the hosts in front 2-1, and UWG turned a double play to end the game in the top of the seventh.
 
Noteworthy
-The home run for Cornell is her third of the season.
-The multi-hit game is the first for Nutt since Feb. 16 against Southern Wesleyan.

Game Changer
-The reining GSC Player of the Week Jada Hayes went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run to tally four RBI in helping the Chargers pick up the bounce-back win in the nightcap.

-The Chargers recorded 11 hits in the game while holding West Georgia to just five, and UAH also took advantage of four UWG errors.
-In addition to the big performance by Hayes, each of Cornell, Amber Hammonds, and Shannon Long had a pair of hits, and Hammonds had a home run on which she knocked in a pair.
-The Chargers homered three times in the game as Long also added a long fly.
-Cornell scored three times, and each of Hayes, Hammonds, and Long scored twice.
-Torie Garner earned the win, going seven innings and scattering four hits and the one run while striking out three.

-UWG scored first, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to claim an early 2-0 lead, but Hayes homered to start the top of the second and immediately cut UAH's deficit in half.
-The 2-1 score was short-lived, however, as the hosts answered with a solo shot of their own in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1.
-In the top of the fourth, Alaina Hampton pulled UAH back within a run when she hit a sacrifice fly to score Cornell who had singled earlier in the inning.
-Hayes then drove in a pair in the top of the fifth to push UAH ahead 4-3, and the guests took a 6-3 lead in the sixth when a pair of unearned runs scored.
-Hammonds and Long then went back-to-back in the top of the seventh, busting the contest wide open and creating the eventual 10-3 final.

-Long now has a team-high five home runs on the season, while Hammonds has four.
