Murphy, Nutt Help UAH Fight Off Elimination with 7-2 Win Over MC

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The 15th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team remained alive at the 2019 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships on Friday, eliminating No. 25 Mississippi College with a 7-2 win. The Chargers improve to 38-14 while the Choctaws drop to 38-14.

UAH will face the loser of West Alabama and West Florida who play at 5:30 on Friday night.

The Chargers used some timely hitting to go along with a strong showing in the circle from Layton Murphy to get the victory against MC.

Murphy tossed her team-best seventh complete game while surrendering just five hits and the two runs, and she matches Kiara Akles with 11 wins to lead the UAH staff.

Offensively, UAH recorded eight hits with each of Mackenzie Nutt, Taylor Wascavage, and Akles logging a pair, and Nutt also led the team by driving in three runs including a pair on a third inning triple.

Shannon Long and Wascavage had UAH's other RBI in the game as each knocked in a run.

The scoring started in the second when a double steal gave the Choctaws their first run, but UAH would answer back immediately with a three-run inning in the second, keeping the ball on the ground and forcing MC into a pair of errors that aided the Chargers in taking the 3-1 lead.

In the third, Nutt would add onto the UAH advantage when she tripled with two outs to plate Ashley Cornell and Akles who had singled and walked to lead off the inning.

Nutt would drive in another run in the fifth, singling in Ava Jacobs who was running for Akles who had started the inning with a base hit, and Wascavage would hit a base hit to center to score Wascavage and give the Chargers a 7-1 advantage.

On the season, Nutt now has 35 RBI including eight in the team's last four games.

MC would tack on a run in the sixth, and Murphy worked around a one-out double for the Choctaws in the seventh to seal the contest.
