UAH Picks Up Road Win at Shorter on Thursday

Box Score ROME, Ga. | A strong shooting night for The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team led the squad to an 87-71 road win at Shorter on Thursday night. The Chargers improve to 7-6 (4-3 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while the Hawks slip to 0-11 (0-6 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-With the game tied at 40-40 at the half, UAH scored 13 of the first 15 points of the third quarter to take a lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the way in the win.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers had five players reach double figures led by Aryn Sanders who had 20 points to go along with five rebounds, five steals, two assists, and a block.
-Holly Harris knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to scoring 17, while, and Katie Speegle also knocked down three triples to score 17 while collecting five rebounds and blocking two shots.
-Selena Pruitt impressively filled the stat sheet with 16 points, a team-best 11 rebounds, a team-high 6 assists, three steals, and a block.
-Rounding out UAH's double-figure scorers, Alexis Woods went 4-for-7 from the floor and scored 11.
-For the game, the Chargers shot 48.4 percent including 40.9 percent from beyond the arc, while the Hawks hit 45.9 percent of their attempts.
-Rebounding in the game was even at 33-33.
-The Chargers forced Shorter into 18 turnovers while only committing 11 of their own to hold a wide 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Inside the Flow
-UAH scored the first eight points of the game, and by the 2:31 mark of the opening quarter, the Chargers were up 16-6 on their way to holding a 18-13 lead going into the second.
-The advantage for the guests would grow to as many as 12 when a Sanders layup made it 37-25 with just under four minutes left in the quarter, but the Hawks closed the second on a strong note, knotting the game at 40-40 at the halftime break.
-After the teams traded baskets to start the third, UAH would take control by scoring 11 straight with back-to-back 3-pointers from Harris making it 53-42 just under three minutes into the period.
-The Chargers finished the third quarter with a 62-53 advantage, but the hosts would pull within four at the 7:34 mark of the fourth quarter at 66-62.
-UAH, however, would put the game away by outscoring Shorter 21-9 the rest of the way to secure the triumph.
 
Noteworthy
-The double-double for Pruitt is the first of the redshirt sophomore's career, and the 11 rebounds and six assists are also career-best marks.
-This is the ninth time this season that Sanders has reached double figures and the fourth time she has scored at least 20.
-Speegle has reached double figures in six straight.
-After dropping seven in a row in the all-time series, the Chargers have now won four straight over Shorter.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will be back in action on Saturday on the road as they head to Cleveland, Tennessee, to battle Lee. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
