No. 20 UAH Drops Pair at Union on Saturday

JACKSON, Tenn. | The 20th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team fell on the road on Saturday, dropping a 5-2 decision and a 6-2 contest to host Union. The Chargers slip to 8-6 (3-2 Gulf South Conference), while the Bulldogs improve to 11-5 (2-0 GSC).

-The two teams will close out the series on Sunday. First pitch of the single game is slated for 1 p.m.

Game Changer
-After the Chargers tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, the hosts scored three times with two outs to create the eventual 5-2 final.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Bulldogs outhit UAH by an 8-6 clip.
-The top of the UAH lineup paced the Chargers as both Kaylee Vaught and Shelby Booker had a pair of hits.
-Lila Young logged a double.
-UAH drew seven walks in the contest with Kelly Ann Sanders earning three free passes.
-Booker and Alaina Hampton drove in a run each for UAH.
-Layton Murphy tossed 4.1 innings scattering four hits and allowing two runs while striking out four.
-Ava Jacobs was charged with the loss as she threw 1.2 innings of relief ball.
 
Key Plays
-Union opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second, and the score remained 2-0 until the fifth winning when Hampton reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Booker who led off the inning with a walk.
-The Chargers tied the game up in the sixth with Young – who had doubled earlier in the inning – scoring on a Booker base hit.
-Union then had a two-run home run followed by a double and run-scoring single to go up 5-2 in the bottom half of the sixth.
-UAH threatened in the top of the seventh, getting the tying run to the plate before the Bulldogs were able to get the third and final out.
 
Noteworthy
-Hampton moves her season RBI total to 11 which ranks third on the squad.

-The Bulldogs put up a four-spot in the second, giving the hosts an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

-Union outhit the Chargers by a 7-6 margin.
-Both Young and Mackenzie Nutt had a pair of hits for the Chargers including a pair of doubles for Young.
-Shannon Long drove in UAH's two runs with a two-run homer.
-Maddie Tankersley takes the setback in the circle for the Chargers.
 
Key Plays
-After Union scored four times in the second, the score remained 4-0 until the sixth when Long would hit it out with Nutt on base after she had walked, making it 4-2.
-The Bulldogs then added a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the sixth to create the 6-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The home run is the second of the year for Long who now has 13 RBI to rank second on the team.
