HUNTSVILLE | Interim Director of Athletics
Dr. Cade Smith and The University of Alabama in Huntsville Department of Athletics announce the hiring of
James Ballamy to be the program's next head women's soccer coach.
Â
Ballamy served during the entire 2019 season as the interim head coach.
Â
"We are really excited to have James join us in a permanent role," Dr. Smith stated. James has been a part of UAH soccer since 2013, and his experience as a player, an assistant for both the men's and women's teams, and his time as the interim head coach have prepared him to be the head coach of our women's soccer team. I am confident that the progress he has made with the program will continue and I am excited about the future of our program."
Â
Under Ballamy's direction in 2019, the Chargers recorded the most wins since 2016 with seven, and the squad earned the most wins in conference play for the program in 18 seasons with five.
Â
UAH put together a four-match winning streak which team also had not done since 2016, and with Ballamy at the helm, UAH had five wins at Charger Park.
Â
"I'd like to first thank
Dr. Cade Smith for this amazing opportunity to carry on working at UAH," Ballamy said. "I appreciate the trust and support he gave me whilst I served as interim head coach, and it was an easy decision to make when I was asked to continue permanently in this role.
Â
"I'd also like to thank the players that I've been fortunate enough to work with so far. They're a bright, talented group of young ladies that made significant progress on and off the field this past fall. I'm excited to continue to work with them as we strive on a daily basis to improve our program. Lastly, special thanks are in order for Jimmy Mitchell and Chris Kranjc who helped in mentoring and preparing me for such an opportunity."
Â
No stranger to the Chargers, Ballamy appeared in over 40 games during his three-year playing career, finishing his time in the Blue and White with five goals and four assists while helping UAH reach the semifinals of the GSC tournament in each of his three years.
Â
In 2016, Ballamy served as a student-assistant with the men's program before joining the women's staff as an assistant prior to the 2017 season.
