No. 18 UAH Splits Saturday in Florida

VIERA, Fla. | The No. 18 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split its Saturday slate in the Sunshine State, falling 3-1 to Florida Southern before bouncing back for a 8-0 win in six innings over Molloy. The Chargers are now 5-3 on the season.

-The Chargers will wrap up the weekend on Sunday with a 9 a.m. CT contest against Saint Leo.

Game Changer
-Florida Southern was opportunistic, scratching across a run in each of the third, fourth, and sixth innings to pick up the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Florida Southern outhit the Chargers by a 5-4 margin in low-scoring affair.
-Shannon Long was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run to lead the Chargers offensively.
-Kaylee Vaught and Ashley Cornell had the other base hits for UAH, and Cornell picked up the lone RBI.
-Maddie Tankersley was charged with the setback while allowing just one hit and a run in 2.2 innings of work.
 
Key Plays
-The first six FSC batters were retired in order, but a hit-by-pitch and pair of walks followed by a two-out single gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead in the third, and an unearned tally in the fourth made it a 2-0 lead.
-Another unearned run in the sixth gave FSC a 3-0 advantage.
-The Chargers would get on the board in the top of the seventh when Long tripled and scored on Cornell's single, but a double play would end the contest with the 3-1 score in favor of the Mocs.

Game Changer
-The Chargers sent seven to the plate and scored three runs in the first inning to set the tone for the contest, and Layton Murphy was superb in allowing just one hit in earning the complete game shutout.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers racked up 11 hits compared the one for Molloy.
-Mackenzie Nutt was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI, while Eve Mallard also was 2-for-3 while driving in a run.
-Driving in a pair of runs with a double was Reagan Malone, while Ashley Cornell also knocked in a score.
-In total, nine Chargers had a hit in the game.
-UAH ran at will on the basepaths, stealing six bags including a pair from Nutt.
-Murphy went the distance in the circle, giving up just the one hit and two walks while inducing 12 groundouts. 
 
Key Plays
-UAH scored its first run when Nutt reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Long – who had tripled earlier in the inning – to score, and the Chargers would go up 3-0 when a miscue on a ball hit into left by Cornell allowed both her and Nutt to score.
-An RBI groundout from Malone in the second plated Lila Young to make it a 4-0 lead.
-Another seven batters would go to the plate in the third for the Chargers with Kiara Akles scoring on an error, Mallard singling in Nutt, and Cornell scoring on another Molloy miscue.
-The score remained 7-0 until Malone ended the contest in the bottom of the sixth with a double into left center that plated Young and created the 8-0 final.
 
Noteworthy
-Murphy picks up her first win of the season and is 1-0.
-Nutt now has a team-high eight RBI.
-With the two triples this season, Long now has five for her career.
-Cornell has driven in runs in five straight games and now owns seven on the season.
