HUNTSVILLE | The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced its weekly award winners for men's lacrosse on Monday, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville's Zak Welsh has been honored as the GLVC Defender of the Week.

This is UAH's first honor of the season and the first for a Charger since the last week of the regular season last year when Luke LeVette was the GLVC Player of the Week.

In UAH's thrilling 9-8 overtime win over Tusculum on Saturday, Welsh posted 18 saves to help the Chargers pick up the victory. He was especially strong in the second half when he made four saves in both the third and fourth quarters, only giving up one goal in the 30 minutes. For the contest, he owned a strong .692 save percentage.

On the season, Welsh recorded 61 saves and features a .598 save percentage. In the GLVC, his save percentage is the fourth-best, and his 15.3 saves per game ranks third in the league.

Welsh and his teammates will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Tennessee Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. CT contest.
