No. 19 UAH Reaches Semifinals for Fifth Time in Six Seasons

HUNTSVILLE | Winning its seventh straight game and advancing to the Gulf South Conference tournament semifinals for the fifth time in six years and 11th time overall, the No. 3 seed University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team easily dispatched of visiting No. 6 seed West Florida by a 74-44 score on Tuesday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 24-5, while UWF ends the year at 14-14.
 
Turning Point
-UAH outscored West Florida by a 21-3 margin over the first 9:19 of the second half, stretching a seven-point margin into an insurmountable 58-33 lead by the 10:41 mark of the period.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Three players scored in double figures for the Chargers with Malik Cook-Stroupe pacing the way as he went 7-for-11 from the floor including a 5-of-8 mark on 3-point tries on his way to scoring 19.
-Max Shulman matched Cook-Stroupe with five triples and scored 15 while also grabbing five rebounds and handing out four assists.
-Scoring 10 and handing out a team-high five assists was Seth Swalve.
-Sam Orf paced the Chargers on the glass with nine rebounds while scoring seven.
-The Chargers shot 43.8 percent for the contest and knocked down 15 3-pointers, while Montevallo was held to a 32.0 percent shooting mark.
-UAH outrebounded the guests by a 39-33 margin.
-The hosts turned the ball over just seven times while forcing UM into 18 to hold a 25-9 edge in points off turnovers.
-UAH's reserves outscored that of the Falcons by a 27-7 margin.
 
Noteworthy
-West Florida made the first two buckets, to build up a 6-0 lead, but a JJ Kaplan 3-pointer at the 12:13 mark of the first half gave UAH its first lead at 12-11.
-The lead would then exchange hands six times, but an Orf bucket with 7:15 remaining in the opening period sparked a 14-4 run that put the hosts ahead 34-27 on their way to holding a 37-30 lead at the half.
-UAH then had the big 21-3 run to open the second half, and ultimately the Chargers would hold UWF to just 14 second-half points, leading by as many as 33 before securing the 74-44 victory.
 
Noteworthy
-Cook-Stroupe registers his fourth game in double figures in his last five outings and his 13th overall on the season.
-This is the seventh time that Shulman has made at least five 3-pointers in a game.
-UAH is now 5-0 in Super Tuesday games since the conference went to campus sites for the quarterfinals.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH will face second-seeded Lee on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of the Samford University in Homewood, Alabama. The two teams split the season series with each squad defending its home floor including an 81-69 victory for UAH on the regular season's final day.
