No. 25 UAH Wins Pair Over CBU at Charger Park Saturday

HUNTSVILLE | The No. 25 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team extended its winning streak to six games on Saturday, taking a pair of games from Christian Brothers by winning 5-4 in the first game and 7-1 in the nightcap. The Chargers improve to 14-6 (9-2 Gulf South Conference), while the Bucs slip to 9-16 (3-8 GSC).

-The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Charger Park.

Game Changer
-The long ball was the name of the game for the Chargers as UAH drove in four of its five runs in on home runs.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Hits in the contest were even at 6-6.
-Both Mackenzie Nutt and Shannon Long led the Chargers with a pair of hits including a double for Nutt and a long fly for Long.
-Alaina Hampton hit a two-run bomb to drive in a team-high pair of runs, while Ashley Cornell had the team's other homer.
-Both Long and Cornell scored twice in the game.
-Layton Murphy went 4.1 innings in picking up the win in the circle for the Chargers, surrendering four hits and four runs while striking out three, and Sydnee Uhlman picked up the save as she pitched the final 2.2 innings while only giving up two hits and no runs while striking out two.
 
Key Plays
-Cornell started the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the first, and the Chargers went up 3-0 when Hampton hit her two-run homer on which Long also scored.
-The guests got on the board in the top of the third with a pair of runs to make it 3-2, but Nutt got one of the runs back with an RBI single that plated Cornell to put the Chargers ahead 4-2.
-Long then homered in the fourth to create a 5-2 score, and CBU pulled within one with a two-run home run in the fifth.
-A 6-4-3 double play in the top of the sixth ended any chance of a CBU threat in that inning, and Uhlman worked around a two-out single in the seventh to end the game.
 
Noteworthy
-Murphy is now 5-0 in the circle.
-Long and Hampton both have four home runs on the year which is tied for third on the team.

Game Changer
-Ava Jacobs tossed five innings of two-hit, shutout ball and struck out four, allowing UAH's four run-scoring doubles and a three-run home run to be more than enough to complete the doubleheader sweep.
 
Inside the Box Score
-UAH outhit the Bucs by a 9-4 margin in the game.
-Cornell and Long both had two-hit games with both Cornell's coming in the form of doubles.
-Nutt and Kelly Ann Sanders also had a double, while Gracie Green had a three-run homer.
-Reagan Malone scored a team-high twice after drawing a pair of walks.
-Jacobs did not allow a run in the five innings and struck out four, while Uhlman came in and worked around a pair of hits in the final two innings to pick up her second save of the day.
 
Key Plays
-After a scoreless first, Green put the Chargers up 3-0 with a blast to left center after she worked a seven-pitch at-bat in the bottom of the second, and the game remained 3-0 in favor of UAH until the fifth when each of Cornell, Nutt, and Sanders doubled in a run to put the hosts ahead 6-0.
-Cornell had another run-scoring double in the sixth to make it 7-0 before CBU got a late homer in the seventh to create the 7-1 final.
 
Noteworthy
-Uhlman earns her fourth and fifth saves to move her career total to 12th which ranks fourth all-time at UAH.
-Long and Nutt are both tied for the team lead in RBI with 18.
-The home run is the first of the season for the freshman Green.
-Jacobs is now 5-1 in the circle.
