UAH Thrills in Home-Opening Overtime Win over Ferris State Friday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team opened the 2020-21 home schedule in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind overtime victory by a final score of 5-4 on Friday night at the Von Braun Center over visiting Ferris State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest. UAH improves to 1-5-1 (1-2-0 WCHA), while FSU dips to 0-7-0 (0-3-0 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
-The Chargers tied the game with just over two seconds remaining in the third period, which forced overtime where UAH picked up the WCHA victory at the 2:30 mark on a slapshot by Dayne Finnson that made it a 5-4 final on Friday.
 
Scoring Breakdown
-Both sides scored one goal apiece in the opening period, with Ferris State going ahead at 4:31 on a marker by Antonio Venuto before the Chargers evened the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal by Tyrone Bronte.
-UAH pulled ahead on a slapshot goal by Drew Lennon at 5:31 of the second, but the Bulldogs knotted the contest back up at 2-2 with a goal by Coale Norris at 9:21.
-The Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead at 12:30 of the second period on Mitch Deelstra, which would be negated by Tyr Thompson's tally for the Chargers at 15:38 to make the score 3-3.
-Justin Michaelian put the Bulldogs ahead 3-2 with 17:23 remaining, but the Chargers eked out of a goal by Ben Allen at the 19:58 mark to force overtime.
-Finnson came through with the game-winning goal on a slap shot at the 2:30 mark of overtime, giving UAH the 5-4 victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Junior defenseman Drew Lennon led the Chargers offense overall in the game with three points on one goal and two assists.
-Bronte, Finnson and Thompson each posted one goal and one assist in the victory.
-Finnson additionally had a team-high four blocks, followed by Brian Scoville with three.
-Five different Chargers scored goals in the win.
-David Fessenden picked up the win in goal to improve to 1-2-1 on the season, after posting 26 saves on Friday.
-UAH did not allow a goal in four power-play chances by Ferris State.
 
Noteworthy
-This was Lance West's first win as head coach of the UAH hockey program.
-Lennon's three points are a career-high in a single game, as he scored his first collegiate goal on Friday night.
-Bronte remains atop the roster in overall points with six on two goals and four assists.
