UAH Completes Series Sweep of Ferris State at VBC, Fessenden Records First Career Shutout

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team completed the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep of Ferris State on Saturday night with a 2-0 win at the Von Braun Center. UAH improves to 2-5-1 (2-2-0 WCHA), while FSU dips to 0-8-0 (0-4-0 WCHA).
 
Turning Point
-After a scoreless first period, UAH put together a two-goal second period which broke the scoreless tie and helped the Chargers to the 2-0 win on Saturday.
 
Scoring Breakdown
-The Chargers went on the board first at the 17:04 mark of the second period as Connor Merkley took a feed from the blue line for a breakaway goal that made it 1-0 UAH. Merkley received helpers from both Tyr Thompson and Lucas Bahn on the score.
-UAH struck again in the second period at the 18:27 mark as Tyrone Bronte sent in a redirect goal on the power play for the 2-0 lead. Dayne Finnson and Mick Heneghan each picked up assists on the goal.
 
Inside the Box Score
-David Fessenden was stellar in goal for the Chargers, posting 42 saves in his shutout performance. Fessenden improves to 2-2-1 with the win.
-Six Chargers had at least one point, with Merkley and Bronte scoring both of the UAH goals.
-UAH amassed 16 blocks as a team, led by Brian Scoville with three blocks.
-The Chargers posted 17 shots on goal, paced by Quinn Green's four shots on goal.
-UAH went 1-for-4 on the power play, while holding FSU scoreless in six power-play chances.
 
Noteworthy
-First career shutout for Fessenden, and the first by a Charger goalie since Mark Sinclair blanked Ferris State on Feb. 22, 2019.
-Fessenden's 42 saves are the most by a Chargers since Sinclair made 35 stops on Feb. 29, 2020 against Bowling Green.
-His 42 saves are second-most by a Charger in a shutout.
-The last time UAH swept a WCHA series was Jan. 18-19 of the 2018-19 season, which was a sweep of Alaska Anchorage at the VBC.
-This is the first time UAH has started with two wins at home since 2005-06.
-Merkley's goal was his first of the season.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH is back on the road next Friday and Saturday with a WCHA series at rival Bemidji State at the Sanford Center.
