Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Terrific Charger Park Crowd Sees UAH Battle to 1-1 Draw

HUNTSVILLE | In front an electric Charger Park crowd under the lights, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team battled for 110 minutes to a 1-1 draw with visiting Mississippi College on Friday night. The Chargers are now 2-2-2 (0-1-1 Gulf South Conference), while MC moves to 3-4-1 (2-2-1 GSC).

With the far sideline packed with UAH supporters and with a buzz that reached a fever pitch during the pregame build-up, the home side controlled play through much of the first quarter hour, but the Choctaws were the ones to strike first as Flippo Bellu scored in the 19th to put the guests up 1-0.

The game would progress through the halftime break with the same scoreline before the momentum shifted as the game neared 15 minutes remaining, and the Chargers would finally break through in the 77th when Connor Young's corner was pushed past the MC keeper by Andres Rodriguez to level the game at 1-1.

UAH would outshoot the Choctaws by a 3-1 clip – as part of its 18-6 advantage in attempts for the game – in the remaining minutes of regulation, but the contest would remain deadlocked after the 90 minutes were complete.

In overtime Mississippi College generated the first strong chance, hitting the crossbar in the 93rd, but the Chargers would not permit another attempt by the Choctaws the rest of the period to force a second overtime. In the second 10 minutes of extra minute, Rafa Moreno would have the lone shot, one of a team-best four he would fire off on the night, but the game would end in the 1-1 draw.

In addition to the advantage in overall attempts, UAH would also hold a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, and corners were even in the game with both teams earning six.

Ethan Haworth made a pair of stops in goal for the Chargers while making his third consecutive start.

UAH will return to action on Sunday when Delta State comes to town for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off. Admission to that contest – and every contest this year – will be free courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.
