Young's Score Lifts Chargers to 1-0 Win Over DSU

HUNTSVILLE | Picking up its first conference win of the season, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team defeated visiting Delta State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH improves to 3-2-2 (1-1-1 Gulf South Conference) with the win, while DSU falls to 4-5-1 (2-4-0 GSC).

With the game scoreless just under 15 minutes into the second half, Sander van der Sluijs would flick the ball to Connor Young who then took it down the right side of the box where he would be fouled to give UAH a penalty kick

Young would step up to take it himself, and though his effort from the spot was saved by the Delta State keeper, the senior would deposit the rebound coolly to his left to give the Chargers what would prove to be the game-winner in the 60th minute.

The goal is the first of the season for Young, and it represents his fifth score of his career.

For the contest, the Chargers outshot Delta State by a 12-10 margin including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, with Ethan Haworth stopping all three on-target attempts by the Statesmen to post his and the team's second clean sheet in the past three games.

Shalev Keter led the Chargers with three shots, while each of Young, van der Sluijs, Jose Bannwart, and Rafa Moreno had a pair of attempts.

The Chargers earned five corners in the game while conceding just one to the visiting side.

In the all-time series with the Statesmen, the Blue and White have now won 10 straight dating back to 2013, and the team has not conceded a goal to DSU since Sept. 30, 2016.

UAH will now look to build off the momentum of an unbeaten weekend at home when the team travels to West Tennessee next weekend for a two-game set in the Volunteer State.
