HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team put up a strong fight, but an early goal would prove to be the difference as Mississippi College was a 1-0 winner on Friday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH slips to 3-2-1 (1-1-0 Gulf South Conference) with the setback, while MC improves to 6-2-0 (4-1-0 GSC).
Â
Dani Avelar would score on the first shot of the game, putting Mississippi College up 1-0 in the fifth minute of the contest, and that would ultimately prove to be the difference maker in the game.
Â
Keeping her team in the game,
Adriana Wright would make three saves in the first half to keep it 1-0 at the half, and the Hedland, Alabama, native would make three more in the second 45 minutes to total six on the day.
Â
Wright's teammates would nearly bring the contest level in the 79th minute of the game as
Carmen Endicott would fire a shot off the post and the rebound try was put on frame by
Melanie Brannon but saved by the MC keeper to preserve the lead for the visiting side.
Â
For the game, Mississippi College outshot UAH by a 12-6 clip including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, and the guests also earned seven corners to UAH's one.
Â
Endicott and Brannon had both of UAH's on-target attempts.
Â
The Chargers will now aim to bounce back on Sunday when the team welcomes Delta State to the Rocket City for a 1 p.m. contest. Admission for that game – and every regular season game this year – will be free courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.
