UAH Set for Program's 20th GSC Tournament Appearance

11/19/2021 10:53:00 AM

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team is set for the 2021 Gulf South Conference Championships as the second seed in the tournament which will be held on the campus of first-seeded West Florida this Friday through Sunday. UAH is scheduled to play a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the GSC tournament semifinals on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

This will be the UAH volleyball program's 20th appearance in the GSC tournament and 16th in the semifinal round, as the team extends a streak of four straight fall campaigns competing in the league's postseason tournament. The Chargers have not won the GSC tournament, but have appeared in the championship game twice in 1995 and 1997.

Due to the fall 2020 campaign being cancelled, the GSC tournament last year was not held and was substituted with the 2021 GSC Spring Championship Series which was won by the Chargers.

UAH – who is ranked sixth in the NCAA South Region – enters the GSC tournament with a 21-8 overall record and a 13-3 mark in league play which led to acquiring the No. 2 seed for this weekend. As the No. 2 seed, the Chargers opponent for Saturday's semifinals will be determined by a first-round matchup between No. 6 seed Montevallo and No. 7 seed West Georgia at 1:30 p.m., followed by a contest between the winner of the UM/UWG contest and No. 3 seed Union at 6:30 p.m.

The GSC unveiled its All-GSC squads earlier this week as UAH notched three honored players, including Sabrina Duncan and Kendall Scharbert on the First Team as well as Molly Presnell as a Second Team selection. As leaders on the UAH roster, Duncan ranks second in the GSC with 9.46 assists per set this season, Scharbert rates fifth in the GSC with a .328 hitting percentage on 246 kills and Presnell leads the Chargers offense with 255 kills and ranks second with 318 digs.

In UAH's last GSC tournament appearance in 2019, the Chargers achieved the second seed to advance to the semifinals but fell to West Georgia in four sets. The Chargers last win in the GSC tournament came in 2018 against Lee in three sets in the quarterfinals.
