ST. JOSEPH, Mo. | The 20th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team played an end-to-end affair with Embry-Riddle on Sunday, falling 103-96 to close out play at the 2021 Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. The Chargers slip to 0-2, while the Eagles improve to 2-0.
Â
Chaney Johnson turned in an impressive performance for the Chargers, going 13-for-19 from the floor including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc on his way to scoring 35 points while also grabbing six rebounds.
Â
The 35 points are the most by a Charger since Jan. 27, 2018, when Chayse Elliott scored 42 against West Florida.
Â
He was joined by three other UAH players in double figures as both
Luke Burnett and
Max Shulman hit four 3-pointers on their way to scoring 19 points, while
CJ Williamson was 5-for-7 shooting on the day to score 12.
Â
Shulman also grabbed a team-high five steals, while
Jack Kostel handed out a team-best five assists.
Â
Elijah Jenkins had 44 for Embry-Riddle.
Â
UAH would lead through much of the early action, building up as much as seven-point lead at 16-9 just under four minutes into the game, but the opening half would swing towards ERAU's favor in a wildly wide-open stanza that saw the team combine for 21 treys before the Eagles carried a 52-48 advantage into the break.
Â
The lead would exchange hands five times in the first five minutes of the second half before a surge in the direction of the Chargers resulted in UAH going up by seven points twice, including at 89-82 after a Burnett triple with 5:34 left in the game.Â
Â
Embry-Riddle, however, would close the game on a 14-7 run including scoring the last eight of the game to create the 103-96 final.
Â
UAH finished the contest shooting 53.7 percent compared to ERAU's 52.1 percent performance, but the Eagles would hit 22 3-pointers to help overcome a 21-10 difference in points off turnovers that the Chargers enjoyed.Â
Â
Embry-Riddle won the battle on the glass by a 40-29 margin.
Â
The Chargers stay on the road next weekend, traveling to the Sunshine State to take on a pair of SSC foes beginning with a Friday contest at Saint Leo. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT.
