CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team scored five times in the second half, surging past host West Georgia in the opening round of bracket play in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer Spring Championship Series. UAH advances at 4-3-1, while UWG ends its season at 3-4-0.
Â
If told the final score line at halftime, one would have found it to be improbable if not unbelievable as the two teams had played to a scoreless draw at that point, but the Chargers wasted no time getting on the board early in the second half.
Â
Taylor Wilson would assist on
Brynn Colvin's first goal of the season just 86 seconds into the period to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead, and it was just five minutes later in the 52nd minute when Colvin assisted on
Laura Hasani's first of the game that made it a 2-0 advantage for the road side.
Â
The scoring would cease for all of 12 minutes before Cassidi Thomas got the hosts on the board in the 64th, but the Chargers wasted hardly any time at all regaining the two-goal lead when Hasani scored her second of the game in the 65th to make it 3-1 in favor of the Chargers.
Â
Another lull came for the next 11 minutes, but
Annie Burd put the Chargers in front 4-1 off an assist from
Caroline Buchanan in the 76th before an own goal made it a 4-2 game just eight seconds later.Â
Â
Burd would add a second in the 86th, and Jazmine Santiago scored in the 89th to create the 5-3 final.
Â
The Chargers owned a 15-3 advantage in shots in the contest including an 8-4 difference in attempts that were on goal, with Hasani taking a team-high six while matching Burd with a team-best three that were on goal.
Â
After UAH built up a 3-2 edge in corners in the first 45 minutes, West Georgia totaled five in the second half while not conceding one to the Chargers to finish with a 7-3 advantage for the game.
Â
UAH played a disciplined game, only being whistled for two fouls, while UWG totaled 11.
Â
The Chargers will now square off against a Mississippi College team that slipped past UAH 2-1 in the regular season back on Feb. 21 at Charger Park. MC earned a bye into the second round of bracket play after going 5-0-0 on the year.
