MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville fell in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championship, dropping a 69-60 decision to host Montevallo. The Chargers slip to 8-8 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 14-5.
Â
UAH will now await word of a potential NCAA tournament berth as the team had been under consideration in the first two editions of the regional rankings.
Â
Alexis Woods had another terrific performance for the Chargers, scoring 22 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season, and the 18 rebounds mark the most for a UAH player since Natalie Kelley had 21 against West Alabama on March 4, 2012.Â
Â
Woods was joined in double figures by
Selena Pruitt who scored 12 while handing out a team-high four assists.
Â
The Falcons would never trail in the game, building up a 23-16 advantage at the end of the first, and the lead would grow to as many as 17 in the second quarter before the hosts carried a 44-29 lead into the locker room at the half.
Â
Outscoring Montevallo 18-15 in the third quarter, UAH would pull within 10 before having a 12-point deficit at 59-47 heading into the fourth quarter, and though the Chargers would make it a 10-point game twice more in the final stanza, they ultimately would pull no closer until the last bucket of the game from Woods created the 69-60 final.
Â
On the night, the Chargers shot 39.1 percent compared to a 31.3 percent shooting mark for the Falcons, and while Montevallo won the rebounding battle by a slim 43-42 margin, UAH enjoyed a 13-5 edge in second-chance points which helped the guests stay within striking distance.Â
Â
A key difference in the game, the Falcons were 21 for their 23 free throw attempts, while the guests earned just eight shots at the charity stripe and made four.
