No. 13 UAH Cruises Past Visiting Shorter in Saturday Sweep

HUNTSVILLE | The No. 13 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team extended its conference winning streak to nine games on Saturday as it picked up a pair of victories over visiting Shorter at Charger Park, winning 13-3 in five innings in the series opener before taking the doubleheader nightcap by an 8-2 score. The Chargers improve to 24-9 (17-6 Gulf South Conference) and secure their place in the GSC tournament, while Shorter falls to 4-20 (0-23 GSC).

Inside the Box Score
-Hits in the contest were even at 9-9, but the Chargers earned 12 walks in the game.
-Gracie Green was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run aiding her in totaling an impressive six RBI in the contest.
-Driving in a pair was Kaylee Vaught who also scored twice as she had a hit and three walks.
-The other multi-hit performance belonged to Ashley Cornell as she was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and two runs.
-Joining Vaught and Cornell in scoring twice were Green and Kiara Akles.
-Gracie Deaton earned the win in the circle as she tossed two innings, not allowing a hit or a walk while also striking out one.
 
Key Plays
-The scoring started for the Chargers in the home half of the first when Alaina Hampton singled in a run before Vaught drove in a pair to make it a 3-0 game.
-UAH blew the contest wide open in the second, sending 12 to the plate as part of a seven-run inning that saw Green get a bases-loaded double that drove in three of the runs.
-The Hawks chipped into the advantage slightly, scoring twice in the second and once in the fourth to make it a 10-3 game, but Green would end the contest in the bottom of the fifth when she belted a three-run jack to create the 13-3 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The six RBI for Green are the most by a Charger since Amber Hammonds had six against West Alabama on April 5, 2019.
-The 12 walks are the most since the team set a single-game UAH record with 16 against Union on May 2, 2019.
-Deaton is now 3-0 on the year in the circle.

Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers outhit Shorter by a 7-4 margin while also taking advantage of six errors by the visitors.
-Hampton and Vaught both had two-hit games including a double for both.
-Mackenzie Nutt and Eve Mallard recorded solo home runs.
-Scoring a team-best twice was Shelby Booker.
-Grace O'Berry went the distance in the circle for UAH, working around the four hits while striking out four and allowing just one run of the two scored by Shorter that was earned.
 
Key Plays
-Shorter scored first, pushing a run across in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, and the score remained that way until the bottom of the second.
-UAH would send eight to the plate in the home half of the second, scoring five times to go in front 5-1.
-The Chargers added onto their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Booker walked, stole second, stole third, and then scored on a throwing error by the Shorter catcher to give her team a 6-1 advantage.
-Nutt and Mallard would homer in the fifth to put the Chargers in front 8-1, and though the Hawks would get a run in the sixth, a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh produced 8-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The home run for Nutt is her third of the season, while Mallard records her second long fly of the year.
-Hampton now features a team-best seven doubles.
-O'Berry improves to 6-2 with a 2.98 ERA on the season.
