LIVINGSTON, Ala. | Displaying an impressive resolve following the tough result in its last time out, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team picked up a rivalry win on Saturday night, going on the road and knocking off host West Alabama 1-0 in a non-conference competition. The Chargers are now 2-2-1 on the season, while UWA is 3-3-0.
Â
The contest was a physical, hard-fought one throughout the 90 minutes, with the two teams both registering just three shots on goal, but it was the Chargers who were able to make one of theirs count.
Â
The winning tally came off the foot of
Rafa Moreno as
Kieran Rowe's shot attempt was blocked by a West Alabama defender, falling immediately to Moreno who took one quick touch and then fired it home in the 58th minute for what proved to be the deciding score.
Â
For Moreno it is his second of the year, and it also marks his second game-winner of the season.
Â
The Chargers held a slight 13-12 advantage in overall shot attempts in the contest, while West Alabama earned six corners to UAH's three.
Â
In goal for UAH,
Ethan Haworth recorded three saves in posting the clean sheet, and one of those stops came in the 90th minute when he punched a strong UWA effort to safety while preserving the victory for his team. The shutout and the victory are both collegiate firsts for the Lexington, South Carolina, native.
Â
A rivalry that was dominated by UWA in its early days – with the Tigers going 8-1-1 in the first 10 meetings – has swung towards the Chargers in recent years as UAH is 3-0-2 in the last five meetings (though West Alabama did advance in the conference tournament on PKs in one of those ties), and the Chargers are now winners of three straight in Livingston.
Â
UAH will now step back into conference play and return home for the first time since the first weekend of the season when the squad welcomes Mississippi College to Charger Park on Friday. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. against the Choctaws.
