LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team did something the program had not done since 2012 on Saturday, going on the road and beating West Alabama 1-0 in a non-conference contest between the in-state foes. The Chargers improve to 3-1-1 with the win, while the Tigers fall to 3-1-1.
Â
The victory is a strong way for UAH to close out the month of September as UWA was receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 poll, and this marks the first regular season loss at Tiger Stadium for Saturday's hosts since Oct. 21, 2018.
Â
A glance at the stats indicates that West Alabama held the upper hand in the contest, outshooting the Chargers by an 18-10 margin (though shots on target were closer at 7-4 in favor of UWA) while also earning five corners to UAH's one, but
Adriana Wright made seven saves, ensuring that
Helena Gonzalez's 30th-minute strike would stand as the game-winner.
Â
The clean sheet for Wright is her first of the season and the third of her career, and it gives UAH two straight games without allowing a goal – a feat the program accomplished last on Oct. 20 and 25, 2019, against Spring Hill and Union.
Â
The score that would prove to be the difference maker was a masterful piece of attacking on a day where defense was the story, as
Brynn Colvin had it down the left side and played a great ball across the field where
Peggy Mathis used a perfect one-touch flick to get it to the feet of Gonzalez who did the rest of the work for her third goal of the season.
Â
Both Colvin and Mathis pick up their first assists of the season.
Â
With the win, UAH earns its first victory over West Alabama since a GSC tournament win on Nov. 1, 2012.
Â
The Blue and White will look to continue its winning ways when it steps back into conference play and returns to Charger Park on Friday when Mississippi College visits. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
