UAH Opens at Home this Weekend with Bill Penney Toyota Crossover Classic

HUNTSVILLE | The No. 24 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team hosts two games to start its 2022-23 home schedule as part of the Bill Penney Toyota Crossover Classic with matchups against Saint Leo on Friday at 7 p.m. and Tampa on Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
The Bill Penney Crossover Classic also features regional matchups between Tampa and Montevallo on Friday at 5 p.m. along with Saint Leo and Montevallo on Saturday at 2 p.m.

General admission attendance is free this regular season, courtesy of Bill Penney Toyota. Single game tickets for reserved seating are also available.
 
The Chargers opened their 2022-23 season this past weekend participating at the prestigious Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Lakeland, Florida, where UAH finished its weekend with an 83-81 victory over No. 6 Lincoln Memorial on Sunday.
 
UAH additionally played No. 4 Nova Southeastern at the SCB Hall of Fame Classic, with the Sharks taking the regional matchup 101-81. The Chargers are now 1-1 entering this weekend.
 
Chaney Johnson was named to the SCB Hall of Fame Classic Team for his performance this past weekend, which included a team-high 25 points and seven rebounds in the victory over LMU on Sunday.
 
His performances additionally garnered him his first career GSC Player of the Week award on Tuesday.
 
Saint Leo starts its 2022-23 season with the matchup against UAH on Friday, as the Lions fell in a tune-up exhibition last Tuesday against Division I Stetson narrowly by a score of 54-53. SLU went 12-15 a year ago, and returns its leading scorer from 2021-22 in Francis Sio who posted 14.0 points per game.
 
Tampa begins its season as well at the Bill Penney Toyota Crossover Classic this weekend, as the Spartans are coming off a 16-10 overall record and a 12-8 conference record in 2021-22. Jonathan Bryant II is the leading returner for the Spartans, after averaging 7.8 points per game last year.
 
After this weekend's games, UAH looks ahead to the start of Gulf South Conference play for the 2022-23 campaign at home against Auburn Montgomery next Saturday at 4 p.m.
