UAH Survives Late UWG Push for Key Road Win

CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team hung on for another key late-season road win on Saturday, defeating host West Georgia 61-59. The Chargers improve to 16-10 (9-8 Gulf South Conference), while UWG falls to 13-12 (10-8 GSC).

UAH has now won six straight against the Wolves.

Max Shulman led the Chargers offensively on the afternoon as he scored 14 after making three 3-pointers, and he also grabbed four rebounds in the winning effort.

Three other Chargers joined him in double figures as CJ Williamson had 12 points and five boards, while Daniel Saylor scored 11. Nearly logging a double-double, Chaney Johnson had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Luke Burnett was also strong on the glass, setting a career-best with seven boards.

UAH turned in a stellar defensive effort that limited West Georgia to a 30.8 percent shooting mark, and the score margin was not wider in part because 10 of UWG's 20 made shots were from beyond the arc.

The Chargers connected on 38.2 percent of their attempts in the game, and the team held a wide 30-16 edge in points in the paint.

Saturday's guests ultimately led wire-to-wire including holding a 28-24 at halftime after Shulman's shot from the logo at the buzzer fell, and the lead would grow to as many as 11 in the second half for the Chargers including at 57-46 with 4:27 left in the game.

West Georgia would turn up the pressure defensively and knock down three triples in the closing minutes to make things nerve-wracking for the Chargers in the final seconds, but a try for the win at the buzzer would not fall in a reversal of UAH's fortunes from Wednesday night at West Alabama.

The Chargers remain tied for eighth in the GSC standings with Delta State with more Saturday results pending, and the team is just a half-game out of fifth place where Montevallo and UWG are tied at 10-8.

UAH will begin the pivotal finish to the season on Tuesday when Valdosta State travels to the Rocket City for a make-up contest that was postponed from New Year's Eve. Tip-off at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is slated for 4 p.m.
