GULF SHORES, Ala. | The No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split on its final day at the Gulf Shores Invitational, falling to Nova Southeastern by a 6-1 score and then beating Christian Brothers 9-2. The Chargers finish the weekend at 3-1.
Â
UAH will now turn its attention to the 2022 Chillout which will be hosted in Albertville in conjunction with Marshall County Tourism & Sports. Play commences on Friday, including UAH's first contest of the weekend which is against Tuskegee at noon.
Â
Nova Southeastern 6, UAH 1
Â
The Sharks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, and NSU would go on to outhit UAH by a 9-3 clip and three more in the top of the sixth to secure the victory.
Â
UAH's run would come in the bottom of the sixth when the Chargers broke up NSU's no-hit bid by picking up all three hits they'd earn in the game in the inning, and the run was plated when
Kaylee Vaught singled in
Shelby Booker who had a base hit earlier in the frame.
Â
UAH's other hit in the inning belonged to
Kiara Akles.
Â
Layton Murphy was charged with the loss in the circle after going three innings and surrendering three runs, while
Grace O'Berry and
Megan Shurtz both pitched a pair of innings in relief.Â
Â
Shurtz allowed just one hit and struck out a batter in her two innings of work.
Â
UAH 9, Christian Brothers 2
Â
The Charger bats came to life in the closing game of the weekend, with UAH pounding out 14 hits to CBU's four in the contest.Â
Â
Booker had a record-matching 5-for-5 performance, and she would come around to score twice, a run total that would be matched by Akles,
Mackenzie Nutt, and
Heather Thompson.
Â
The five hits match a UAH single-game record which has now been done six times, with the most recent instance coming on April 25, 2018, when
Alaina Hampton had five hits against Miles, and Booker is just the 24th player in GSC history with five hits in a game (the record is six held by Lauran Lewis of Henderson State).
Â
Laura Harbin and Vaught both had a pair of hits, with Harbin driving in a team-best three runs, and both Vaughn and Nutt had a double in the game.
Â
No Charger struck out in the game.
Â
Shurtz entered the game in relief of
Jessie Cole who had started the contest, and Shurtz would give up just three hits and no runs over seven innings while striking out seven and walking only one.
Â
UAH was the visiting team on the scoreboard and struck first with Akles reaching on an error that would allow Vaught to score and
Lila Young driving in Booker to produce a 2-0 advantage, but a pair of bases-loaded walks for CBU in the bottom frame would knot the contest at 2-2.
Â
A sac fly from Vaught in the second put the Chargers back in front, and Harbin reached on an error in the third to plate another run and make it a 4-2 lead.
Â
UAH would then turn in a big fourth inning, using a pair of hits in addition to taking advantage of three Christian Brothers errors to score three times to go up 7-2, and the team tacked on its final two runs in the sixth when Harbin singled in a pair of runs to create the eventual 9-2 final.
