Tough Colorado Mesa Squad Defeats UAH on Wednesday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's lacrosse team dropped a 19-10 decision to visiting Colorado Mesa on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Park. The Chargers slip to 1-1 on the year, while CMU starts at 1-0.
 
The Mavericks received the third-highest number of votes of those just outside of the national rankings in the latest USILA top 25.
 
Six different Chargers recorded a pair of points in the contest including both Josh Campbell and Preston Deno who scored twice in the game, while ach of Kyle Light, Jacob Thomas, and Bryce Ferraro had a goal and an assist. Jake Schramm had a pair of helpers on the day.
 
Also adding goals for UAH were Reid Vender, Brody Phillips, and Ian Arnt.
 
Campbell picked up a team-best three ground balls, and both he and Collin Galinski caused a team-high two turnovers. 
 
Zak Welsh made 12 saves in goal for UAH.
 
The guests quickly jumped out in front, grabbing a 5-0 lead by the 8:59 of the first quarter, and though Campbell would score a pair of goals in the opening period, the Chargers would find themselves down 8-2 going into the second. The teams would then trade goals in the second quarter with Thomas and Ferraro notching tallies, creating a 10-4 score at the break.
 
CMU started the third off strong, scoring three straight before Arnt got on the board, and after taking a 14-6 advantage into the fourth, the Mavericks tallied five straight to start the final quarter to go in front 19-6.
 
The Chargers would hold the visitors off the scoreboard for the final 8:52, stringing together four straight of their own to produce the 19-10 final.
 
The Mavericks outshot the Chargers by a 58-42 clip including a 31-21 edge in attempts that were on target, and the guests also built up a 39-19 difference in ground balls.
 
The Chargers will be back in action on Saturday when the team hits the road for the first time in 2022, traveling to Franklin Springs, Georgia, to take on Emmanuel. That game is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start.
