UAH Takes Midweek Non-Conference Doubleheader from Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team traveled down I-65 for a non-conference doubleheader with Montevallo, and the Chargers swept aside the Falcons, winning 11-1 in five innings before taking the nightcap 7-4. UAH improves to 13-4 with the victories, while UM falls to 7-7.

UAH will be back in action on Friday when the team starts a three-game set with Delta State at Charger Park. The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start.

UAH 11, Montevallo 1
The Chargers ran away with the day's first game, outhitting the hosts by a 13-4 margin, and five of UAH's hits were for extra bases including three doubles, a triple, and a home run.

Shelby Booker went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs, while Lawren Hayes also had a three-hit game and scored twice while also driving in another. Both Jada Henderson and Kiara Akles had a pair of hits – including a double for Akles and a triple for Henderson – to help them both drive in three runs.

Driving in a couple of runs with a two-run homer was Gracie Green, and the round-tripper is the first of the year for Green and her second as a Charger.

Sadie Thompson added UAH's other double.

In the circle, Grace O'Berry went the distance in picking up her first victory of the season, scattering four hits while allowing just the one run and striking out a pair.

UAH scored in every inning but the second, including a three-run fourth and a big six-run fifth inning.

UAH 7, Montevallo 4
The day's second game was more of a back-and-forth affair, and it was not until the sixth inning that the Chargers would go in front for good.

Hits in the contest were closer with UAH holding a 13-11 advantage, and it was Sadie Thompson who had the biggest swings in the game, going 3-for-4 with three RBI including driving in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Thompson also scored three times.

Booker and Jada Henderson both were 2-for-4 in the contest, and each of Akles, Lila Young, and Green had a double in the game, giving UAH 30 doubles on the season.

Megan Shurtz pitched four innings of relief and earned the win to move to 5-1 on the season while lowering her ERA to a 1.98, and she impressively recorded Ks for nine of the 12 outs she recorded.

Shurtz now has 17 strikeouts in her last two outings, and the nine Ks represent the most by a Charger pitcher this season.

The teams traded a pair of runs on two different occasions, with Montevallo going up 2-0 in the first before UAH responded to tie the contest in the second, and again in the fourth when the Chargers went in front briefly before the Falcons tied it at 4-4.

After a scoreless fifth, the Chargers would put together a strong sixth inning that started with Green's double which was promptly followed by Thompson singling through the right side to score her. After stealing second, Thompson then moved up to third on a productive groundout by Hayes, and she scored to make it 6-4 when Kaylee Vaught singled up the middle.

UAH would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Mackenzie Nutt had a pinch-hit base hit that plated Young who led the inning off with a double.
