Bats Aid in Bounce-Back Victory as Chargers Split at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday, winning 11-2 in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Lee after dropping the first contest 7-0. UAH is now 17-10 (7-7 Gulf South Conference), while Lee goes to 14-13 (8-8 GSC).

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.

Lee 7, UAH 0
The Flames picked up 10 hits in the contest while limiting UAH to six singles and four runners left on their way to the series-opening win.

The top of the UAH lineup was responsible for four of the team's hits, led by Shelby Booker in the two hole who was 2-for-3 in the game.

Layton Murphy took the loss in the circle for the Chargers, tossing three innings before being relieved by Maddie Tankersley who pitched the final three frames.

Lee scored three times in the second before adding two runs in the fourth and another in each of the fifth and the sixth.

UAH's biggest threat came in the top of the sixth when Vaught and Booker strung together base hits with one out, but the pair would ultimately be stranded.

UAH 11, Lee 2
The Chargers followed up the first game with the best offensive performance of the season, pounding out a season-high 15 hits including a double, a triple, and three home runs.

UAH had entered the contest with just six homers on the year before Kiara Akles had a pair of two-run jacks to go along with Kaylee Vaught's solo shot.

It was again the top of the order that led the charge for UAH, with each of Vaught, Booker, and Akles going 3-for-4 in the game. Akles finished the contest with five RBI, Vaught drove in a pair, and Booker also knocked in a run.

Akles scored three times, and both Vaught and Booker crossed the plate twice.

In the cleanup position, Alaina Hampton was 2-for-3 with a double while also scoring, while Lila Young was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Grace O'Berry started the game for UAH in the circle, tossing 2.1 innings and giving up three hits and an unearned run in addition to striking out one, and Megan Shurtz pitched the final 2.2 frames, also allowing three hits and an unearned tally while striking out five and walking none.

UAH scored a pair in both the first and second to build up a 4-0 lead, and after Lee scored a run in the bottom of the second, it would be a scoreless third before the Chargers busted the contest wide open in the fourth with a five-spot. Another pair of runs crossed for UAH in the fifth before Lee scored in the fifth to create the 11-2 final.

Vaught increases her team-best RBI total to 27 on the year, while Akles moves her total to 22 thanks to the pair of homers that put her now in a tie for fourth all-time at UAH with 44, matching the total that four-time All-American and current associate head coach Melanie Carter recorded in her illustrious career.
