HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mississippi College on Saturday, winning 6-2 in the opener before taking game two by a 2-1 score. The Chargers improve to 19-13 (9-8 Gulf South Conference), while MC falls to 14-16 (7-12 GSC).
Â
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a scheduled start time of 12 p.m.
Â
UAH 6, Mississippi College 2
The Chargers may have only had four hits in the game, but with two of them being homers including a three-run shot from
Kaylee Vaught, the hosts had more than enough to secure the series-opening victory.
Â
Alaina Hampton added the other home run for UAH, and
Sadie Thompson had a two-run single.
Â
Lawren Hayes also had a hit for UAH.
Â
UAH also exhibited a patient approach at the plate, drawing seven walks which matched the total the team collected in the previous six games combined.
Â
Layton Murphy went the distance in the circle for the Chargers, scattering eight hits and allowing the two runs while striking out a pair, and the senior picked up her sixth win of the year to move into a tie with Tyler Harrison for sixth all-time at UAH with 59 career victories.
Â
The visitors took the game's first lead, crossing the plate in the top of the third, and the score remained 1-0 until the Blue and White put together a five-run fourth inning.
Â
The scoring in the big frame started when Thompson singled in both Hampton and
Lila Young to put the Chargers in front, and after Hayes singled up the middle, Vaught hit a long fly to straightaway center to boost the UAH advantage to 5-1.
Â
Hampton added onto the lead for UAH in the fifth with her solo shot to left, and MC would get a solo home run of its own in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Â
Vaught becomes the first Charger to 30 RBI this year with the three she record in the game, and the home run is her second of the season. Hampton's round-tripper is her third on the year.
Â
UAH 2, Mississippi College 1
In the second game, the Chargers would outhit MC by an 8-5 margin as
Megan Shurtz tossed the complete game in the circle, making a pair of mid-inning runs stand up.
Â
Kiara Akles had a pair of doubles in the game to go 2-for-3, while Hampton added another RBI on a double to move her total to 21 on the season.
Â
Akles now has seven doubles to rank in a tie for second behind Hampton's team-leading 13.
Â
Shurtz moves to 9-3 on the season after working around the five hits and giving up just one run while striking out four and walking none. The freshman now has 62 Ks on the season.
Â
The game was scoreless until the third when Hampton and Akles switched places on a double into the right field corner, and UAH doubled its lead when Hayes had a sac fly in the fourth that plated Young.
Â
MC got on the board in the fifth with another solo homer, and the team threatned in the seventh, getting runners to first and second with just one out before Shurtz induced a double play ball to end the contest.
