UAH Now Winners of 10 Straight After DH Sweep of Shorter

ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games, sweeping a doubleheader from host Shorter by winning 11-0 and 8-0, both in six innings. The Saturday triumphs push the Chargers to 31-14 (17-9 Gulf South Conference), while the Hawks fall to 6-40 (2-23 GSC).

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a noon CT contest on Sunday.

UAH 11, Shorter 0 (6 inn.)
The Chargers pounded out 14 hits to just four for the hosts in the day's first game, and Alaina Hampton led the way with a 3-for-4 day with three RBI thanks in part to a solo home run.

Each of Mackenzie Nutt, Lila Young, and Lawren Hayes had a two-hit game, with both Young and Hayes logging a double, and each off Shelby Booker, Young, and Hampton scored twice in the contest as UAH capitalized on five Shorter errors.

Layton Murphy went the distance in the circle, picking up her 13th win of the season and her first shutout of the year as she allowed just the four hits while striking out seven in the six innings.

Hampton got the Chargers on the board with a single in the second that plated Young, and she doubled UAH's lead with her solo shot in the fourth that made it 2-0. UAH then added another run in the fifth when Booker singled and came all the way in to score after an error in the Hawk outfield, and the guests then erased all doubt that was remaining in the contest with an eight-run sixth.

UAH 8, Shorter 0 (6 inn.)
It was more of the same in the second game as the Chargers outhit Shorter by a 12-4 margin, and Hampton once again was terrific as she finished 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI, and two runs.

After the big day on Saturday, Hampton now has 15 doubles, seven home runs, and 35 RBI.

Booker finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple and also scored twice, while Nutt drove in a pair of runs.

Sadie Thompson gave UAH five hits for extra bases as she had a solo home run.

Improving to 12-4 in the circle, Megan Shurtz went the distance for her first shutout of the year, and she struck out two while allowing just the four hits.

Nutt opened the scoring as she singled in Kaylee Vaught, and a sac fly from Young and an RBI double from Hampton gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead in the first. UAH added onto the lead with another RBI from Nutt in the third, and Gracie Green drove in a run on a sac fly in the fourth to create a 5-0 advantage.

The Chargers then went back-to-back in the sixth as Hampton hit a two-run jack followed by Thompson's homer that created the eventual 8-0 final.
