ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team won its 11th straight and its 14th off its last 15 when the team beat Shorter on the road by a 9-1 score on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 32-14 (18-9 Gulf South Conference), while Shorter falls to 6-41 (2-23 GSC).
Â
UAH has also now won four straight conference series, and as of press time, the Chargers are now fourth in the GSC standings. Additionally, this is UAH's longest winning streak since a 10-game stretch of victories in 2018.
Â
Hits in the contest on Sunday were even at 12 for both teams, but UAH pitching worked to strand 11 Hawks runners to help earn the lopsided victory.
Â
Shelby Booker paced the Chargers with a 3-for-5 days that saw her drive in four runs while also scoring once, and her three-hit showing was matched by
Kaylee Vaught who crossed the plate three times after also drawing a walk.Â
Â
Booker increases her batting average to a team-best .438 which is the highest it's been for her since the second weekend of the season, and the four RBI match her single-game career high.
Â
Gracie Green drove in a pair of runs, while each off
Eve Mallard,
Alaina Hampton, and
Lila Young also had an RBI.
Â
Picking up the victory – 13th of the season – in the circle was
Megan Shurtz who pitched four innings of relief, working around six hits while not allowing a run and striking out a pair.
Â
Hampton started the scoring for the Chargers when she picked up her seventh RBI of the weekend in the top of the first after knocking in Vaught, and though the Hawks would get a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1, UAH would take complete control in the second when the team scored six times including four times when with the bases loaded Booker doubled and then took advantage of an error to score.
Â
Mallard added a sac fly in the top of the third to give UAH an 8-1 advantage, and Booker's final RBI of the contest came in the top of the seventh to produce the 9-1 final.
Â
The Chargers will now turn their attention to closing out the regular season next weekend when the team welcomes West Alabama to Charger Park for a three-game series. Saturday will mark Senior Day, with the set starting with a doubleheader that is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
