Chargers Now Winners of 13 Straight After Senior Day Sweep

HUNTSVILLE | The winning streak is now 13 games as The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a Saturday sweep of visiting West Alabama at Charger Park, winning 7-1 and 5-2. The Chargers improve to 34-14 (20-9 Gulf South Conference), while the Tigers fall to 26-22 (15-14 GSC).

The two teams will close out the series and the regular season on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.

UAH 7, West Alabama 1
The Chargers outhit UWA 10-3 in the opener, following an always emotional Senior Day ceremony in which UAH honored Kiara Akles, Shelby Booker, Alaina Hampton, Eve Mallard, Layton Murphy, and Mackenzie Nutt.

Murphy then went out and shut the Tigers down, allowing just the three hits and one run while striking out three to earn her 14th win of the season and the 67th of her career.

All 10 hits for UAH were singles, with Kaylee Vaught, Lila Young, and Gracie Green all having a two-hit game. Vaught drove in three runs in the victory, while Young Knocked in a pair.

Nutt also had an RBI.

The Chargers scored a run in each of the first three innings with Nutt singling in a run in the first, Vaught driving one in in the second, and Young knocking in another in the third to give UAH a 3-1 lead.

The score remained that way until the fifth when the hosts put a four-spot on the board.

Vaught now has 39 RBI on the season, and she has hit safely now in eight of the last nine contests.

UAH 5, West Alabama 2
It was the visitors who outhit UAH by a 7-5 margin in the second contest, but a four-run first proved to be more than enough for the Blue and White.

Nutt finished the contest with a pair of RBI – both in the big first inning – while each of Young, Sadie Thompson, and Gracie Green also had an RBI from the 6-7-8 positions in the lineup, respectively.

Young had a double in the contest, and Green belted a solo homer.

Megan Shurtz picked up her 13th win of the season, working around the seven hits while picking up three strikeouts – all of which came in the last five outs she recorded.

After Nutt singled in a pair of runs to start the scoring in the first, Young's RBI double plated Nutt, and Thompson also drove in a run in the inning to give UAH a 4-0 advantage.

Green then belted her second homer of the year in the fourth to create a 5-0 lead for the Chargers, and she now has a hit in 10 of her last 12 games.

UWA would then get a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to produce the 5-2 final.
