HUNTSVILLE | The No. 9 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team opened up a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Charger Park with a 10-2 victory in five innings over West Florida on Friday afternoon. UAH improves to 17-4 (6-1 GSC), while UWF slides to 8-8 (2-4 GSC).

The Chargers scored at least one run in each of the five innings of Friday's contest including three-run rallies in the first and fourth innings to propel UAH to the 10-2 win to open the series.

Lawren Hayes had a stellar day at the plate in the victory over the Argonauts, as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a triple, a home run and one RBI out of the leadoff spot. Hayes homer was her first of the season, and it also walked off the game in the bottom of the fifth for the 10-2 win.

Gracie Green also hit her first home run of the season with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third, and she tied for the team lead with
Alexa Douthitt with two RBI apiece in the game.

Lila Young gave the Chargers two players with multi-hit performances with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, with UAH totaling 10 hits as a team with five of those hits going for extra bases.

Megan Shurtz tossed the full 5.0 innings with two runs allowed and five strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season. She is now 5-1 in 2023.

UAH and West Florida wrap up the three-game series at Charger Park with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
