Chargers Split Saturday Doubleheader, Win Series Over No. 19 Valdosta State

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader against visiting Gulf South Conference opponent No. 19 Valdosta State, winning game one 4-3 and dropping the second game in a high-scoring affair 15-14.

The Chargers record now sits at 24-17 (15-9 GSC), while the Blazers are 25-12 (15-9 GSC).

UAH returns to action next weekend when they travel to Jackson, Tennessee to take on Union starting Friday at 6 p.m.

G1: UAH 4, VSU 3

In game one, the Blazers came out swinging and took an early lead, scoring one run in the first and took a two-run lead with another run in the third.

The Chargers struck back in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run inning and did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the game.

At the plate, UAH was led by Garrett Bodine and Will Noles who each recorded a pair of hits and one RBI in the game. Caleb Mahan also contributed one RBI for the cause.

Andre Orselli recorded his fourth win of the campaign after the graduate student went six innings and gave up just two earned runs. Will Hotalen earned his fifth save of the season with an extended relief outing of three innings and gave up zero earned runs.

G2: VSU 15, UAH 14

The script was flipped in game two as the Chargers took an early four run lead on a Colin Brewer grand slam in the first inning against the GSC's top pitcher Zach Henderson. VSU scored two runs in the third, but UAH extended the lead to six with a four-run bottom frame.

The Blazers went on to score the next 11 runs before UAH put up six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to draw the game even at 14 before a VSU run in the top of the seventh gave them the win.

Hunter Tillman, Mitchell Rottier, Bodine, Brewer, and Mahan each recorded multiple RBI in the game. Jackson Lindsey and Rottier contributed doubles, with Brewer launching the only home run of the game for the Chargers.

On the mound, seven pitchers saw action, with Trey Wright getting the start. Wright went two innings and gave up one earned run. Hotalen was saddled with the loss in this one as he pitched one inning and gave up one earned run.
