Women's Soccer Second Half Push Comes Up Short at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. | The UAH women's soccer team's second half push came up short in a 3-2 loss at West Georgia on Sunday in Gulf South Conference play to wrap up a two-match road trip. UAH slides to 4-3-0 (2-2-0 GSC), while UWG improves to 2-2-3 (2-1-1 GSC).

After going into a 3-0 deficit in the 67th minute on Sunday, the Chargers registered back-to-back goals by Gracie Gustafson in the 77th minute and Jayla Gillespie in the 85th minute to make a one goal game. Gillespie also helped generate Gustafson's tally, notching an assist on the play.

Neither team would record a shot in the final five minutes in a tightly contested matchup, as UWG went on to win it 3-2.

Gillespie now leads the Chargers offense with four goals and nine points (4g-1a) so far in her sophomore season, while Gustafson scores her third goal of 2023 and second of the weekend.

CeCe Szopa played the full time in goal for the Blue & White, allowing three goals and notching three saves. She has now recorded three or more saves in three straight games, as her record slides to 2-2-0 in 2023.

Szopa additionally helped the UAH defense navigate seven corner kick opportunities by West Georgia.

UAH returns home for two GSC matches at Charger Park next weekend with visits from Auburn Montgomery on Friday and Montevallo on Sunday.
