OXFORD, Ala. | The UAH softball team opened play at the 2024 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships with a thrilling 2-1 walk-off victory over fifth-seeded Valdosta State on Wednesday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. UAH improves to 38-14, while VSU slides to 29-22.

The Chargers move on to play the winner of No. 1 seed Mississippi College and No. 8 seed Lee on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.

Maddie Cartron provided a clutch solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh to win it 2-1 for the Chargers. Cartron drove in both of UAH's runs in the victory, as she finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Josie Thompson started in the circle for UAH in the GSC-tournament opener, tossing 6.0 innings with one run allowed and three strikeouts.

Katie Bracken earned the win in relief to improve to 16-4 this season, as she worked the seventh inning with no runs allowed and two strikeouts to setup Cartron's clutch at-bat.

UAH had five hits overall, with
Alexa Douthitt,
Jada Henderson and
Caitlin Bryson all notching one base hit to go along with Cartron's multi-hit performance.

This is the UAH softball program's 28th all-time appearance in the GSC tournament.
