HUNTSVILLE | The UAH men's soccer team wrapped up the week's slate with a 1-1 tie against visiting Georgia Southwestern State on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park in nonconference action. UAH moves to 1-1-2, while GSW's record now stands at 2-0-2.
Â
Georgia Southwestern took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a goal in the 29th minute, as UAH would knot the contest early into the second half in the 58th minute on a goal by
Oli Orzechowski from an assist by
Justin Alcantara.
Â
Both sides went scoreless for the remainder of the second half – despite eight combined corner kicks – as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Â
Orzechowski is the first Charger to reach the two-goal mark in the 2024 campaign with his second of the season. Alcantara – a Madison, Alabama, native – picks up his first assist of the season.
Â
Freshman
Sonny Wright played the full time in goal for the fourth time this season, recording one save against the Hurricanes. He was aided defensively by Alcantara and
Harvey Hewson who both played all 90 minutes on Sunday.
Â
Wright has now allowed one or fewer goals in three consecutive games.
Â
UAH put together 14 total shots in the contest, with two of them coming on goal. Orzechowski and
Henry Mpagi Jr. each had one shot on target apiece to lead the offense.
Â
The Chargers look ahead to the start of Gulf South Conference play for the 2024 season on Friday at Charger Park with a visit from the league's newest member Trevecca Nazarene. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Rocket City.
