HUNTSVILLE | The UAH softball team opened Gulf South Conference play at Charger Park on Friday afternoon against Christian Brothers with a doubleheader sweep by scores of 3-2 and 9-1. UAH improves to 8-5 (2-0 GSC), while CBU slides to 6-5 (0-2 GSC).
The Chargers and Buccaneers wrap up the three-game series on Saturday at noon.
Game One: UAH 3, CBU 2
The Chargers first home win of the season was a walk-off as
Sydney Harris delivered a game-winning, RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth to make the UAH victorious 3-2 over CBU in game one of the doubleheader.
Junior
Katie Bracken had a stellar outing in the circle for the Blue & White, turning in 8.0 innings with one earned run allowed, 14 strikeouts and zero walks allowed. Her record rises to 3-2 with the win.
Harris led the Chargers with two base hits on the day, with UAH totaling six as a team in the contest to go along with four walks. UAH also had two extra-base hits, including a two-RBI double by
Jada Henderson and a triple by
Lawren Hayes.
Game Two: UAH 9, CBU 1 (6 inn.)
UAH won game two on the run rule in the bottom of the sixth, as the Chargers plated three runs to seal it in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer by
Alexa Douthitt and a walk-off RBI double by
Kylee Smith.
The Chargers totaled 14 base hits as a team, guided by
Sydney Harris and
Sadie Thompson who both went a perfect 3-for-3 with one walk.
Lawren Hayes,
Brittany Slaten, and
Maddie Cartron each had multi-hit performances as well with two hits in the win.
Douthitt drove in a team-high three runs, followed by Hayes with two RBI in the night cap.
Megan Shurtz tossed the full 6.0 innings in game two on Friday, as she allowed one earned run with seven strikeouts. Her record rises to 4-3 with the win.
UAH has now won 38 consecutive games against Christian Brothers.
