No. 3 Men's Basketball Set to Begin NCAA Tournament Play on Saturday

FORT LAUDERDALE | The second-seeded UAH men's basketball team is set to begin the 2025 NCAA Division II South Region Men's Basketball Championships on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with a first-round matchup against seventh-seeded Tampa on the campus of top seed Nova Southeastern University.

The Chargers earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament after winning the Gulf South Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship with a 30-1 overall record and a 25-0 record in GSC play. The undefeated conference record is the third in conference history.
 
This is the seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their highest seeding since 2016-17 when they held the top seed in the tournament. With 30 straight wins, the Chargers hold the longest winning streak in Division II as they head into the tournament. 
 
GSC Coach of the Year Mick Hedgepeth's squad has the fourth-best field goal percentage in Division II at 52.43 percent and the second-best effective field goal percentage in the nation at 60.7 percent. The Chargers also hold the sixth-best scoring margin in the country at +15.0 points per game. 
 
Tommy Murr leads the Chargers as the GSC Player of the Year as he averaged 21.1 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 5.5 assists per game during the season. Murr led the nation in free throw percentage at 93.92 percent. 

Blake Campbell earned the 2025 Truist GSC Men's Basketball Championship Most Outstanding Player honor for his performance in the conference tournament. Campbell averaged 20.7 points per game during the tournament along with 6.3 rebounds per game and 6.0 assists per game. 

UAH scored 88.0 points per game during the season, which ranked second in the GSC as they held opponents to 73.0 points per game. The Chargers had the best three point percentage in the league at 38.6 percent. 
 
Tampa enters Friday as the seventh seed in the region with a 20-10 record overall. The Spartans ranked third in the Sunshine State Conference in points per game as they put up 89.1 points per game. They held the second-best rebounding rate in the league with 42.5 boards per game. 
 
The Chargers hold a 6-4 record all-time against the Spartans and have won the last three matchups in a row. The last time the teams played was a 80-71 victory for UAH in Spragins Hall in the 2022-23 season.
 
Overall, the Chargers are 17-15 in NCAA Tournament history. Their last Regional Championship came in 2012. 
 
The winner of Saturday's game moves on to the NCAA South Regional semifinals on Sunday at 4 p.m. against the winner of No. 6 seed Montevallo and No. 3 seed Florida Southern.
