HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Riding a 15-game winning streak, the UAH Chargers women's basketball team returns to Huntsville this week to host a pair of Gulf South Conference opponents inside SportsMED Arena in Spragins Hall
UAH enters the week with a 16-3 overall record, an 11-0 mark in conference play, and remains undefeated at home this season. The Chargers will host Valdosta State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before welcoming West Florida, a game originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. but moved up a day due to the potential for winter weather this weekend. Thursday: Valdosta State at UAH
UAH and Valdosta State meet for the second time this season after the Chargers earned a 72-67 road win earlier this year in Valdosta, Georgia.
Valdosta State arrives in Huntsville with a 9-8 overall record and a 6-5 mark in the GSC, riding a three-game winning streak. The Blazers feature one of the league's most balanced profiles, ranking third in the conference in scoring offense (71.0 points per game) and fifth in scoring defense (64.6).
Thursday's matchup showcases two of the most efficient shooting teams in the GSC. UAH leads the league in field goal percentage at 46.8 percent, while Valdosta State ranks second at 43.8 percent. The Chargers also sit atop the conference in three-point shooting (35.9 percent), while the Blazers rank third in opponent three-point field goal percentage (27.7).
Valdosta State's defense is active on the perimeter, ranking second in the conference in steals at 9.06 per game.
Individually, the contest features two of the league's top scorers. UAH senior guard Lili Wilken ranks among the GSC leaders at 21.8 points per game, while Valdosta State's Erin Whalen averages 14.5 points per game and is second in the conference in rebounding at 9.1 per contest.
Friday: West Florida at UAH
Friday's matchup pits the top two teams in the Gulf South Conference standings.
UAH leads the league, while West Florida enters the weekend in second place with a 13-5 overall record and an 8-3 mark in conference play. The Argonauts come to Huntsville on a two-game winning streak.
The Chargers took the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season with a 70-53 win in Pensacola, Florida.
West Florida is led by Amelia Bell, who tops the GSC in field goal percentage and has recorded 22 blocked shots, tied for the conference lead.
