Chargers Bash Barry in Season-Opening Doubleheader Sweep

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. | The UAH softball team opened the season with a doubleheader against Barry University at Buccaneer Field on Thursday, taking both games with a 7-2 win in game one followed by a 16-6 victory in the nightcap.

UAH improves to 2-0 on the season, while Barry falls to 0-2.

Game one: UAH 7, Barry 2 (7 innings)

The Chargers broke open a close contest with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a triple from Brittany Slaten that drove in Baylee Darby. Jill Cockrell followed with a single to bring in Slaten, and Alexa Douthitt doubled to plate Cockrell, giving UAH a 3-0 lead.

UAH added runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, including RBIs from Keli Madden, Alexa Douthitt, and Kylie Ballentine, to secure a 7-2 victory.

Junior Katie Bracken was dominant on the mound, throwing all seven innings while allowing just four hits and two runs, striking out 10. With the win, she improved to 1-0 on the season.

At the plate, Slaten led the way with three hits, including a triple, and scored twice. Douthitt went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ballentine added a hit and two runs scored, Madden had an RBI, and Cockrell drove in a run.

For Barry, Alexis Martin started and allowed five runs over four innings, with Isabel Vera giving up two more in relief. Chandler Barry and Shelby Prevatte drove in the Buccaneers' only runs.

Game two: UAH 16, Barry 6 (5 innings)

UAH exploded for a six-run fourth inning and a 10-run fifth to pull away from Barry in the nightcap. Gracie Ashley, Jill Cockrell, Mia Brown, and Baylee Darby all had multiple RBIs during the innings.

The Buccaneers struck first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, but UAH tied it in the third before Barry briefly regained the lead with a two-run third inning. The Chargers answered with back-to-back innings, highlighted by singles and doubles from Allie Yeary, Brown, Cockrell, Ballentine, and Ashley, eventually turning a 3-3 tie into a 16-6 advantage.

Megan Shurtz earned the win, pitching three innings and allowing three runs with three strikeouts. Brylie Waechter and Lydia West combined for two more innings of relief to close out the win.

UAH's offense was led by Mia Brown, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Cockrell with 2-for-3 and four RBIs, and Ashley with two hits and an RBI. Ballentine, Douthitt, Yeary, and Darby all contributed multiple hits and runs in the Chargers' attack.

For Barry, the Buccaneers' six runs came on RBI hits from Sarah Langlie, Mya Tucker, Vivian Billard, Isabel Vera, and Alexis Martin, but they could not contain UAH's late-game surge. Vivian Billard took the loss after allowing seven runs over 3.2 innings.

The Chargers will continue the weekend-long competition on Jan. 31 with a 9 a.m. matchup against Barry, followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest versus Nova Southeastern, looking to build on their strong start to the 2026 season.
