Chargers Clinch GSC Championship Berth With Sweep Against Union

The University of Alabama in Huntsville clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship with another win Friday night. The Chargers earned their win, 3-0, at home in the SportsMED Arena at Spragins Hall in a second win of the season against Union.

While the score remained close through the first series of rallies, the Chargers (18-2, 10-1 GSC) pulled away with their sixth point against the Lady Bulldogs (5-17, 1-10) before ripping off a 8-0 run to take a 13-4 lead. While Union stopped the UAH run with a point, it only served as an intermission before the Chargers continued to widen the scoring gap with another four unanswered points to take a 17-5 lead with Kayla Ward and Emily Redman earning kills through the run. UAH incrementally closed out the opening set over the next several rallies before Anna Clare Hutto notched a kill before the Chargers took the set, 25-16, on a Union attacking error.

Picking up where they left off, the Chargers continued to apply pressure and take the lead through the second set with a 4-0 run to earn a 9-5 lead as Mary Grace Bundrant and Cooper Garrett combined for a block while Sydney Durban scored two service aces through the run. At the 15-point media timeout, UAH took a six-point lead on the Lady Bulldogs before steadily adding on to the lead the remainder of the set. UAH stretched its lead to 11 points, 23-12, with another 5-0 run kicked off by three straight kills from Garrett before Calli Tanielu closed it with another kill.

Union took the first point of the third set before UAH began to ride its momentum to a 9-4 lead capped by a Kate Kizer service ace. As the Chargers rotated its full active roster through the match, UAH cemented its hold on what would ultimately be the final set as it took a 15-7 lead at the media timeout. The Chargers took a 21-11 lead off a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Katelyn Weller before Union found some footing to bring the score closer. UAH, however, finished off the set and match on a 4-1 advantage will kills from Anna Clare Hutto, Amelia Smith, and two from Alex McGeehan.
