A night after clinching a spot in the Gulf South Conference Championship, the University of Alabama in Huntsville continued to roll with a 3-0 sweep of Christian Brothers at home in SportsMED Arena at Spragins Hall.
While the Chargers (19-2, 11-1 GSC) fell behind the Lady Buccaneers (7-16, 3-8) on the first point of the match, it proved to be only one of two times Christian Brothers held the lead for the entire match. UAH traded points over the next few rallies before it began to break away on a 7-0 run to take a 19-6 lead as Ella Schumacher scored two kills while Mary Grace Bundrant recorded a solo stop through the run. The Chargers closed out Set 1 with a kill from Kayla Ward and a final service ace from Cooper Garrett as UAH won 25-10.
The score ran closer in Set 2, though UAH kicked off the set with a 9-5 lead before the Lady Bucs managed to bring the score closer over the next several rallies, including taking a 17-16 lead against the Chargers. That lead was short-lived, however, as UAH scored the next three points and eventually closed out the set on a 5-1 run capped by another Schumacher kill to take Set 2, 25-20. While the offense was nearly identical on both sides, UAH scored four service aces while limiting its mistakes while CBU committed four service errors and eight attack errors.
UAH jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead to begin Set 3 as Amelia Smith recorded a solo stop to begin the set of exchanges before Ward and Emily Redman combined to make another block. The Chargers continued to build on their lead with a 5-0 run a few exchanges later with Schumacher, Garrett and Ella Moore notching kils while Anna Clare Hutto added a service ace to help take a 11-3 lead. While CBU earned a smattering of points through the second half of the set, UAH would not be stopped as Moore finished off the set and match with a final kill to take Set 3, 25-14.
