Chargers Clinch Second Straight GSC Tournament Berth With Senior Night Victory

For the first time in 13 years, the  University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team is headed to the Gulf South Conference Tournament in consecutive seasons after securing a 2-1 victory over Mississippi Christian on Friday evening at Charger Park.

The Chargers (7-7-1, 5-5-1 GSC) punched their postseason ticket for the second straight year, marking the program's first back-to-back GSC Tournament appearances since the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Kaitlyn Lewis opened the scoring in the 27th minute, giving UAH a 1-0 advantage that held through halftime. AC Blackaby doubled the lead in the 62nd minute with what proved to be the game-winning goal. Mississippi Christian cut the deficit in the 86th minute, but the Chargers held on to secure the victory.

UAH placed eight of its 12 shots on goal, while CeCe Szopa and Kacey Powell combined for six saves in net. Szopa recorded two first-half saves before Powell took over at halftime and added four stops to preserve the win.

The victory capped a memorable Senior Night as UAH honored eight Chargers before the match: CeCe Szopa, Kacey Powell, Caila Batchelor, Ashley Wells, Carley White, Evelina Gustafsson, Zina Moesen and Michelle White.

UAH will await its first-round opponent in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, which begins Nov. 1.
