CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. | The UAH softball team kicked off the Chattanooga Invitational on Friday with a 10-2 victory over the Cedarville Yellowjackets. The win moves the Chargers to 5-2 on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-2.
UAH got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Alexa Douthitt grounded out to second base, driving in Jill Cockrell for an early 1-0 lead. Cedarville answered in the bottom half of the inning on a single from Anna Gardner that scored Ella Leonard, tying the game at 1-1.
The Chargers took the lead in the second inning on a two-RBI home run by Kylee Smith and then erupted for seven runs in the third. Mia Brown and Allie Yeary delivered RBI doubles, Brittany Slaten and Jill Cockrell added RBIs, and Alexa Douthitt capped the inning with a double to score Cockrell for UAH's tenth run. Cedarville scored once in the bottom of the third, but UAH maintained a comfortable lead.
Kennah Lacy earned the win, tossing two innings with one earned run and one strikeout. Brylie Waechter and Lydia West combined for three innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out three. Cedarville's Chesnie Patton took the loss, giving up six earned runs over 2.1 innings.
Jill Cockrell led the Chargers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Alexa Douthitt finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Kylee Smith added a home run and two RBIs.
The Chargers look ahead to their next two games in the Chattanooga Invitational, facing Palm Beach Atlantic at 12:30 p.m. and Ohio Dominican at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Chattanooga.
