UAH Softball Wraps Up Chattanooga Invitational

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. | The UAH softball team split its final games of the Chattanooga Invitational on Sunday, falling 8-3 to No. 8 West Texas A&M before bouncing back with a 1-0 win over Young Harris. The Chargers improve to 8-3 on the season, while West Texas A&M moves to 9-2 and Young Harris falls to 4-4.

Game One: UAH 3, West Texas A&M 8
The first two innings were scoreless until West Texas A&M broke the game open in the third inning, scoring six runs on a pair of hits. UAH responded in the bottom of the third with a three-run rally, highlighted by a triple from Jill Cockrell that drove in two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly from Alexa Douthitt. Despite the comeback attempt, West Texas A&M added two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 8-3 victory.

Katie Bracken took the loss for the Chargers, allowing eight runs on nine hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Jill Cockrell led UAH offensively with a triple and two RBIs, Baylee Darby added two hits, and Brittany Slaten contributed a double and a run scored.


Game Two: UAH 1, Young Harris 0
UAH rebounded in the second game with a 1-0 victory over Young Harris. Allie Yeary drove in the game's lone run in the second inning when she reached on a fielding error and Mia Brown scored. Megan Shurtz and the UAH pitching staff held Young Harris to just two hits while striking out eight in a complete-game shutout.

Shurtz earned the win, throwing seven scoreless innings. Offensively, Jill Cockrell contributed a triple and Mia Brown recorded an RBI.


The UAH softball team returns home to Charger Park on Friday, Feb. 13, to open play at the Sam Baldwin Memorial Invitational with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against Shorter University.
