VALDOSTA, Ga. | Baseball fell to Valdosta State 11-5 on Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Billy Grant Field. With the victory, the Blazers claimed the series two games to one.
Junior Colin Patterson made his first start of the season for the Chargers and took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Patterson worked 2.0 innings, allowing seven earned runs on three hits with four walks while striking out two.
Valdosta State struck first with two runs in the bottom of the opening inning, but UAH responded in the top of the second to even the score. Braxton Griffin delivered a two-run home run, his first of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.
The Blazers regained control in the bottom of the third inning, scoring eight runs to build a lead the Chargers could not overcome.
UAH attempted to chip away at the deficit in the middle innings. Jayce Upton drove in two runs in the fourth inning, and Hugh Windle added an RBI double in the eighth, but Valdosta State maintained its advantage to secure the 11-5 victory.
Upton recorded two hits in the contest, marking his second consecutive multi-hit performance and third of the season.
With the loss, the Chargers fall to 6-11 overall and 4-5 in Gulf South Conference play.
UAH will conclude its five-game road trip on Tuesday, March 3, when the Chargers travel to Pulaski, Tennessee, to face UT Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
