PENSACOLA, Fla. | The UAH softball team earned a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over the West Florida Argonauts on Friday at the UWF Softball Complex, claiming a 6-1 victory in game one before taking the nightcap 10-1.
UAH improves to 21-9 overall and 7-4 in GSC play, while West Florida falls to 18-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
Game One: UAH 6, West Florida 1
West Florida scored first in the opening inning, but UAH quickly responded in the second. Allie Yeary delivered an RBI single to tie the game before Jill Cockrell followed with another RBI single to give the Chargers a 2-1 advantage. UAH added to its lead in the third inning when Mia Brown singled up the middle to bring home Alexa Douthitt, extending the lead to 3-1.
The Chargers created space in the sixth inning, as Cockrell doubled to center field to score a run, and Brittany Slaten followed with a two-RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.
Katie Bracken was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just two hits and one run. She struck out seven to improve to 7-3 on the season.
At the plate, Cockrell and Slaten led the Chargers each with two hits and two RBIs, while Yeary added two hits and an RBI. Brown finished with a hit and RBI as part of UAH's 10-hit effort.
Game Two: UAH 10, West Florida 1 (6 innings)
UAH's offense continued its momentum in game two. The Chargers struck in the first inning when Alexa Douthitt delivered a two-RBI single to score Slaten and Cockrell for an early 2-0 lead. UAH added two more runs in the third inning, including an RBI double from Hannah Temple, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Chargers broke the game open in the fourth inning with four more runs. Douthitt drew a bases-loaded walk, Kylie Ballentine delivered a two-RBI double, and Douthitt scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 8-0. West Florida got on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run from Angelia Discenza, but UAH answered with two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Mia Brown and a sacrifice fly from Temple to seal the 10-1 win.
Megan Shurtz earned the win after pitching six innings and allowing just four hits and one run with three strikeouts, improving to 8-4 on the season.
Offensively, Slaten had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a stolen base. Douthitt drove in three runs, Ballentine added three RBIs, and Brown finished with two hits and an RBI. Temple also contributed two RBIs in the victory.
UAH will look to continue the series against West Florida on Saturday, March 14, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
