BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The UAH softball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Columbus State on Wednesday. UAH opened the day with a 3-2 victory and followed with an 11-2 win.
UAH improves to 25-14 overall, while Columbus State drops to 20-15 overall.
Game One: UAH 3, Columbus State 2
UAH struck first in the opening inning with an Alexa Douthitt singling to left field, driving in Jill Cockrell to open the game at 1-0. The Chargers took the lead in the fourth inning when Baylee Darby and Kylee Smith scored on a throwing error, giving UAH a 3-1 advantage. Columbus State managed a run in the bottom half of the fourth, but UAH held on for the 3-2 win.
Megan Shurtz earned the complete-game win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five. Offensively, Douthitt led with two hits and one RBI, while Jill Cockrell and Baylee Darby each had a hit and scored a run.
Game Two: UAH 11, Columbus State 2 (5 Innings)
The Chargers' offense exploded in game two, scoring one run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kylie Ballentine that brought in Brittany Slaten. UAH broke the game open in the second inning with six runs, highlighted by multiple RBI singles from Jill Cockrell, Brittany Slaten, Mia Brown, and Kylee Smith, with a wild pitch adding an additional run.
UAH extended their lead in the third inning, scoring four additional runs. Allie Yeary scored on a walk drawn by Brittany Slaten, Baylee Darby scored on a wild pitch, and Jill Cockrell also scored on a wild pitch, giving the Chargers a commanding 11-1 advantage. Columbus State managed a run in the third and another in the fifth, but UAH's defense remained dominant throughout the game.
Katie Bracken earned the win, tossing three innings and allowing one run on two hits, while Kennah Lacy added two innings of relief, giving up one run on five hits and striking out three. At the plate, Brittany Slaten had three runs and two RBIs, Jill Cockrell added two RBIs and two runs scored, and Mia Brown, Kylie Ballentine, and Kylee Smith each contributed a run and an RBI.
Next up, the Chargers return home to host Union in a Gulf South Conference series at Les Stuedeman Field in Huntsville. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m.
